Skype Author Visit
Fifth graders at Travell School had the chance to Skype with Rob Buyea, author of Because of Mr. Terupt.
All 5th grade classes heard this story as a read-aloud. The book was written from seven different student voices that all came together to tell a story about a teacher who made a difference in their lives.

The fifth graders worked in groups to come up with thoughtful questions for Mr. Buyea. We even got the chance to hear him read aloud from his next book, Mr. Terupt Falls Again, set to come out this fall. Everyone loved it!

We are especially thankful to the Travell School HSA for providing us with this memorable experience.
The Dirtmeister
“The Dirtmeister,” Steve Tomecek, shared his knowledge of Science with the Travell students as a “kick-off” for our Science Fair on March 8th. He demonstrated about 20 different experiments dealing with forces, Newton's Laws of Motion and the interaction of sound and light energy.

Ira W. Travell's Birthday
Travell School celebrated Ira W. Travell's birthday. Students wore their Travell Wear or blue and yellow, our school colors. We sang “Happy Birthday” and celebrated with cupcakes.

Here is some information we have learned about our namesake, Ira W. Travell:
Ira W. Travell was born in Troy, NY on January 17, 1868, to Ira Rose Travell and Elvira Amelia Pierce Travell.  The second of four boys, he graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, MA, and married Margaret Belle Ansley.  In 1912 he became the superintendent of the Ridgewood Schools and served in that position until 1930.  Mr. Travell was said to be a man “of broad education, the superior executive ability and high character.”
School Wide Read Aloud Assembly
This month’s School Wide Read Aloud book is Just Kidding by Trudy Ludwig. This book is the addresses the topic of teasing.
In this story, D.J. is tired of Vince's mean-spirited comments at school. Vince knows which buttons to push and uses “just kidding” when he goes too far. Unsure how to handle the situation, D.J. talks with his father and his teacher and learns a few strategies to help him deal with putdowns. Most importantly, he realizes that he isn't the problem and that he hasn't done anything to deserve Vince's taunts. Thanks to our Home and School Association for purchasing a book for every classroom.
Harlem Wizards
Ridgewood’s Federated Home and School Association is proud to present the Harlem Wizards fundraiser, Friday, January 27, at 7:00 pm at RHS in Gym 1.  There will be pizza, drinks, and souvenirs sold at halftime! We hope to see you there!!
